Silverfish - How to Control Them Naturally?

Silverfish - How to Control Them Naturally?
16 Mar2016

Silverfish are primarily nocturnal and wingless insects that can grow up to a length of 2.5 centimetres. They move their silver hued bodies in a way similar to that of the swimming movements of a fish. They generally dwell in areas that are humid and damp, such as bathrooms, kitchens, etc. Although they are innocuous to humans, they can be a very annoying pest due to their detrimental feeding habits. The diet of silverfish primarily consists of cellulose, starch and sugar. Hence, they love to feed on wallpaper glue, fabrics, clothing, books, paper, paintings, photographs, cereals, etc.

A single silverfish can live for around 8 years, and the females can lay a 100 eggs during their entire lifetime. That’s why it is very important for you to take suitable steps for eliminating them as soon as detect an infestation within your household. Most people make use of chemical pesticides for getting rid of silverfish quickly. But these pesticides contain toxic substances that can lower indoor air quality and also pose threat to the health of human beings living within the house. Instead, there are several natural means which you can utilise to keep the pests at bay. Have a look at some of them mentioned below:

  • Create a trap for the silverfish in your house. Wrap twine or masking tape around a tall glass container and place some crackers or dry oatmeal inside it for attracting the pests. Once they crawl in greedily, they would not be able to escape.
  • Mix some powdered sugar or flour and borax together, top it on a cracker and place the preparation near hiding spots of the critters. Keep it away from places where pets or small children roam about frequently.
  • Sprinkle some diatomaceous earth around those areas where silverfish are sighted more often. When walked upon, the earth would cover the bodies of the pests and scratch their exoskeletons, leaving them dehydrated.
  • Combine small amounts of water and cedar oil, and apply the mixture to suspected spots using a sprayer. Silverfish cannot tolerate the odour of cedar oil.
  • Mix honey, water and baking soda in equal parts. Combine thoroughly and apply it on small cardboard pieces. Place the pieces in tight spots like behind books kept on a bookshelf.

If a large scale infestation exists within your household, contact a professional pest control firm and let them take care of the problem.
